Dining out has become a significant part of modern culture, with people increasingly exploring diverse cuisines. In this context, Dalchini, an Indian restaurant, offers a unique dining experience. The decor, designed by Ketan Jawdekar, subtly evokes a sense of nostalgia without letting cultural overtones dominate the space. The use of recycled materials forms the essence of the decor, making it a perfect blend of sustainability and style.
The design of Dalchini is unique in its ability to connect with the patrons on an emotional level. The childhood memories, cherished by many, are subtly brought to life in the restaurant's decor. Stacks of newspapers represent the monotonous and busy city life, while the subtle use of childhood paper crafts provides a sense of relief and emotional connection. This innovative approach creates a sense of belonging, enhancing the dining experience as patrons enjoy Indian mother’s recipe at Dalchini.
The realization of this design was a challenge due to the low budget for the project. However, this constraint led the designers to think out of the box. The focus was on using recycled and sustainable materials to reduce costs. Newspapers were used as a replacement for traditional decor elements, and natural black stone Kudappah, locally available, was used for the flooring. This innovative approach not only reduced costs but also added a unique aesthetic appeal to the restaurant.
The restaurant, spread over 120 square meters, including the kitchen, was completed between November 2016 and January 2017. The design process involved extensive research to ensure that the decor remains fresh and interesting over time. The designers successfully infused contemporary styling with essential extracts from childhood memories, creating a unique ambiance that draws patrons to the restaurant over and over again.
The design of Dalchini has been recognized for its creativity and innovation. It was awarded Silver in A' Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The award is a testament to the unique and sustainable approach adopted by the designers in creating Dalchini.
